PATIENT FEEDBACK
When my daughter said Dr van der Spuy is the best - I trusted her opinion implicitly. I now know this to be true first hand. From the first consultation to before and after theatre, Dr van der Spuy was kind, caring and considerate. He is a credit to his profession and I am extremely grateful to him and his team.
I am 75, male, reasonably fit and active. It is 5 months since surgery to repair dupuytren's contracture on 3 fingers of my right hand.
It is difficult to review the performance of a surgeon, when his service is performed while one is asleep! And of which one has no prior experience. But one needs to spend only a few minutes with Dr Van Der Spuy to become aware that he is a most gifted and intelligent individual. When I consider that he spent almost 2 hours repairing one hand, I am sure that that his work was microscopic and exacting. The surgery was faultless. Post op pain management was excellent. I never needed the really powerful stuff! Dr Van Der Spuy's practise management (Samantha and team) handled the admin matters faultlessly. There were queries from my medical aid which were managed with expert efficiency. What a pleasure!
Occupational Therapist, Kerri Collett, was firm, gentle, encouraging and very professional. From removal of sutures to rehabilitation therapies over several weeks, she was a star. As predicted, recovery has been slow. But I must accept much of that responsibility myself. I was given lots of printed information and advised to google for more, which I did. But I studied what to expect regarding surgery and initial recovery and I had intended to read further, after surgery. I never did. Kerri gave me thorough instruction on home rehab exercises and massage, but when I reread the info brochures, I found that I had missed a few essential points. So I have ramped up my exercise regimen and improvement progresses slowly.
In conclusion, the operation is a great success, I have been camping wild along the Orange river, removing and overhauling a classic car engine and doing whatever I would normally have done. Many thanks to Doctor and Team.
