HAND SURGERY PHILOSOPHY
The human hand is probably the most intriguing and complexly engineered bio-advanced miracle known to the human mind.
It is therefore not hard to believe the theory that the brain developed secondary to the hand. The wealth of sensory input from the hand feeds the brain, creating millions of new pathways...
APPROACH TO THE MUSICIAN
The special needs of the musician are commonly overlooked and under-appreciated.
Considering the technical skill required to perform at a high level, the long hours of practice and the biomechanical strain on muscles and joints, it is not surprising that the musician battles with a wide spectrum of...

INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS
Due to the weakness of the South African rand, most of the procedures undertaken by Dr van der Spuy have become relatively affordable and patients find it a very cost efficient avenue for treatment, especially for those who are on a long waiting list with the National health insurance system in Europe or the UK. What is hand surgery?
Hand surgery is a speciality that is performed by either orthopaedic surgeons (bone doctors) or plastic surgeons. The beauty of hand surgery is that it is a combination of bone work (like fractures of bones) and reconstruction of soft tissues (skin, tendons, nerve and muscle and blood vessels). These are usually very intimately related, and most hand surgeons have done extra training in order to equip them to manage these intricate surgical procedures.
Dr van der Spuy’s practice is geared to manage a wide range of conditions, including fractures of the upper limb, lumps, pinched nerves, micro-surgical repair of damaged nerves, blood vessels and tendons, and soft tissue reconstruction. His practice manages traumatic injuries like fractures, lacerations or joint dislocations, as well as chronic conditions like arthritis (osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis), gout, and the management of less common congenital hand anomalies.
Dr van der Spuy also offers a super specialised service catering for the needs of sportsmen and musicians.
