ELEVATION OF THE ARM & HAND
Elevation is the most important intervention for any hand injury or infection. It utilises the force of gravity to reduce swelling that will optimise mobility, lower compartment pressures and enhance better wound healing.
This needs to be written in a prescription chart and more importantly checked by the doctor. Elevation on a pillow is not as effective as elevation in a simple pillow slip.
- The arm and hand has to be elevated perpendicular to the floor surface to optimise the effect.
- Use a drip stand, orthopaedic rope, safety pin and pillow slip to construct the elevation traction.
- Put a pillow under your elbow to prevent the constrictive free edge of the pillow to worsen swelling. The elbow must rest on the pillow.
- Fold the pillow over the arm and close with safety pin. The hand must be visible.
