Hand surgery is the highly skilled art of combining orthopaedic and plastic
surgery to relieve pain and restore function in the most complex, miraculously
engineered anatomical structure.

What is hand surgery?

Hand surgery is a speciality that is performed by either orthopaedic surgeons (bone doctors) or plastic surgeons. The beauty of hand surgery is that it is a combination of bone work (like fractures of bones) and reconstruction of soft tissues (skin, tendons, nerve and muscle and blood vessels). These are usually very intimately related and most hand surgeons have done extra training in order to equip them to manage these intricate surgical procedures.

Dr van der Spuy’s practice is geared to manage a wide range of problems, including managing fractures of the upper limb, general lumps or pinched nerves, micro-surgical repair of damaged nerves or blood vessels and soft tissue reconstruction. His practice would manage traumatic injuries like fractures, lacerations or joint dislocations, chronic conditions like arthritis (osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis), gout, as well as the management of the less common congenital hand anomalies.

Dr van der Spuy also offers a super specialised service catering for the needs of sportsmen and musicians.

Thank you, Dr van der Spuy and therapist Michelle Venter for giving me the use of my right hand again. I broke my wrist whilst on holiday and 3 months later I could still hardly use it. Dr van der Spuy re-broke my wrist, inserted a plate to hold the bones in place and did a carpal tunnel operaton to help my fingers to straighten. I have reverted to being right-handed again and shall be everlastingly grateful to Dr van der Spuy and his wonderful, caring team. - Pamela

Dr van der Spuy operated on my radial nerve and lateral epicondylitis – he has been so amazing. He thinks out of the box, is compassionate, caring and unbelievably knowledgeable. Something rare in the medical industry these days. My husband and I have been blown away by his professionalism and kindness and can’t thank him enough. Highly, highly recommended. The most wonderful surgeon/specialist.- Renate Handke-MacRobert

Patients take note, Dr Dirk van der Spuy is a remarkable SURGEON. He operated on my hand on the 28th of August and with stitches and my hand in a bandage, I started to exercise my hand with virtually no pain. I had the stitches removed on the 9th September and I received the same excellent service from the ladies at the consulting room. It was a pleasure to be treated by Dr van der Spuy and his staff.

I am not quite out the woods yet but I so highly recommend Dr van der Spuy and his team (Mandy, Kerri) – if you have to be in the woods there is no one better to take you there than Dr van der Spuy. The practice is so professional and personal at the same time. The rooms are beautiful and peaceful – and Dr van der Spuy is very special – he has such a gentle – and professional – hand. I trust him 150%. Thank you to the team for seeing me through thus far and I look forward to reaching the finishing line very soon. I have so appreciated being in your care! - Jacqueline Goldin
